Pele will reunite with the Mohun Bagan’s class of 1977 who will be felicitated at the Netaji Indoor Stadium in the ‘Legend’s Nite’ where he will also interact with former India cricket captain and Atletico de Kolkata co-owner Sourav Ganguly.
Two-time academy award winning music composer A R Rahman and West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee are slated to join Pele while tennis star Rafael Nadal is also scheduled to join the show through a video conference. With the biggest festival of the state, Durga Puja, set to begin with Mahalaya on Monday, the Brazilian is also likely to inaugurate a pandal later in the day.
On the last day of his tour, the 74-year-old will be the guest of honour in ISL defending champions Atletico de Kolkata’s first home outing against Kerala Blasters at the Vivekananda Yuva Bharati Krirangan in Saltlake. The Brazilian will also be part of an auction dinner on Tuesday, the proceeds of which would go to the Chief Minister Relief Fund.
After Kolkata, Pele on Wednesday evening would head to the national capital Delhi where he will witness the Subroto Cup final on October 16.
The visitors were wasteful with their opportunities and were made to pay dearly with Sanli leading the charge for Platt’s side.
David Platt’s sojourn in the Indian Super League (ISL) with Deccan side FC Pune City began with a 3-1 win over Nicolas Anelka’s Mumbai City FC. Tuncay Sanli (12′) opened the scoring before Frederic Piquionne (34′) levelled proceedings. Sanli (56′) got his second after the break which was followed by a third for the hosts courtesy of Israil Gurung (68′).
The English coach sprung a few surprises by electing to field a 4-5-1 formation without some of his Indian stalwarts who are away on international duty. Steve Simonsen started in goal, whilst Gouramangi Singh and Diego Colotto began in central defense. The veritable Nicky Shorey began on the left wing.
The attack, bereft of Adrian Mutu, on the bench for the start of the campaign, was led by Tuncay Sanli alongside Israil Gurung and Maithani on the wings.
Anelka started Ashutosh Mehta, Pavel Cmovs , Juan Aguilera and Keegan Pereira started in defence with the goalkeeper on the night being Albino Gomes. Sony Norde helmed the attack while accompanied by Andre Moritz and Fredrick Piquionne.
Good work by Piquione down the right early on in the game saw him cut a ball across for Gabriel Fernandes in the middle. The Goan midfielder however could do no better than warm the keeper’s gloves with a shot straight at him.
Sanli popped up with the goal to settle Pune City down in the 11th minute. A dominant Mumbai dozed off at the back and allowed Gurung too much space. The winger delivered the ball to the back post where Sanli made no mistake with the header.
Mumbai sought an immediate reply and nearly had one. Norde effortlessly shanked past his defender and was clear down the left side of the box. However, instead of passing to his teammate who was unmarked, he opted to shoot and only managed to have his effort blocked.
Norde was a handful and the Haitian repeatedly kept fizzing shots from outside the box towards goal, one which was particularly difficult for Simonsen to handle.
Fernandes was causing all sorts of problems for Gurjinder and the Goan once again managed to wriggle himself free of the defender’s grasp. His ball in was acute, but Diego Colotto somehow managed to get back in time.
A great run down the right by Gabriel was followed by a cross that found itself all the way to Norde at the far post. The attacker, with an empty net to aim at, managed to crash his shot against the post.
However, Mumbai maintained possession and Ashutosh delivered a sublime cross onto head of Fredrick Piquione who finished into the bottom corner as Anelka’s men drew level.
Chances were coming fast for the Blues, with Gabriel blasting a great counter wide and Juan Aguilera soon missed an opportunity to head Mumbai into the lead as Ashutosh Mehta’s dink to the Spaniard was hit straight to an alert Simonsen.
A superb cross into the box saw Piquine grapple for it, inadvertently setting up Norde for a shot he should’ve had on target, yet the Mohun Bagan forward blasted it over and the teams went into the break level at 1-1.
Yendrick Ruiz was brought on at the start of the second half in place of James Bailey.
Moritz then had a great chance to double Mumbai’s lead but he blasted the ball wide. He would go onto regret it as the Orange and Purples scored again.
It was the Gurung-Sanli combination for a second time as a sumptuous cross from the right found its way to the far post where the forward headed in again.
On the hour mark, goal scorer Sanli was withdrawn for marquee player Mutu. Minutes later, Moritz who looked to have a match he was likely to forget, was replaced by Selim Benachour .
Norde wasted a free-kick with a poor delivery which was won by Mehta down the right.
A fairly speculative cross by Gurung in the 68th minute took a massive deflection off Juan Aguilera and the ball looped past the outstretched hands of Gomes to plonk itself in the corner of the net to give Pune a 3-1 lead.
A last-ditch interception by the captain on the night for Mumbai City, Bertin, certainly prevented the score-line from getting embarrassing for the away side as Ruiz was on hand to convert.
The team from the commercial capital then threw on Nicolas Anelka as a last resort.
The 8734 strong crowd were stunned however when Lenny Rodrigues limped off with a suspected hamstring injury. Sushanth Mathew, a former Blaster took his place. Anelka was dropping deep as his side sought a way back intpo the game, but the creative had evaporated. Mumbai gained a series of corners as the referee indicated four minutes. Gurung too went down with suspected cramps as he had to be stretchered off.
The game however was closed down effectively by Pune City as the home team recorded their second straight Maha Derby victory.

Anthony Martial proved to be a decisive figure in the match as the 19 year-old scored a brace to help Manchester United come back from being a goal down to win the match against Southampton 3-2. Graziano Pellè opened Southampton’s account as the Italian striker scored for the Saints in 13th minute. However the lead couldn’t last long as Martial levelled the score in the 34th minute.
Five minutes into the second half, a poor back-pass from Southampton defender Yoshida was converted into a goal by Anthony Martial, to give Manchester United the lead.
Spaniard Juan Mata added the third goal for the Red Devils.
However, towards the dying stages of the match, Graziano Pellè headed home his and Southampton’s second goal of the match, giving the Saints’ fans some hope. But despite numerous efforts towards the end, Southampton failed to find the equaliser and went on to lose 3-2 to United.
Top Indian shuttler PV Sindhu started her campaign at the US $600,000 Korea Open with a hard-fought win over Thailand’s Ratchanok Intanon, but it was curtains for Parupalli Kashyap in men’s singles event at the Super Series tournament here today.
Two-time bronze medallist at World Championship, Sindhu eked out a 21-19 21-23 21-13 win over the former World Champion in a women’s singles match that lasted one hour and nine minutes.
Commonwealth Games champion Kashyap, however, could not cross the opening round hurdle after his battle ended with a narrow 21-17 16-21 18-21 loss against Wei Nan of Hong Kong in an hour-long match.
It was also curtains for Pradnya Gadre and Sikki Reddy in the women’s doubles competition as they suffered a 24-26 9-21 loss to the Japanese pair of Shizuka Matsuo and Mami Naito at the SK Handball stadium.
Sindhu, who came into the match with a 0-3 record against the World No. 5 Intanon, showed her mettle till the end to emerge victories against an opponent who had beaten her in straight-games all three times in 2013.
The two players engaged in a tooth and nail fight from the start as after Sindhu opened up a narrow 4-2 lead in the opening game early on, Intanon turned the tables and moved to a 9-6 advantage.
The Indian reeled off four straight points to wrest back control but after that it turned out a rollercoaster ride as lead changed hands too frequently before Sindhu broke off at 18-18 to close the first game in her favour.
In the second game, Sindhu fought back from 4-7 and 8-12 to jump to 20-15 lead and with a chance to seal the match but Intanon produced six straight points to first topple the Indian and then roared back into the contest.
In the decider, Intanon quickly grabbed a 7-3 lead but the a gritty Sindhu soon clawed back and started dominating the proceedings as she continued to extend the gap which the Thai girl could not bridge.
In the men’s singles match, World No.8 Kashyap was up against an opponent he had beaten in China Open last year. The Indian started off well to take a take an early lead against Wen.
In fact, Kashyap had a 13-10 lead at one stage in the second game but the Kong Kong shuttler scored five straight points to grab the lead and then at 17-16, produced another four points on the trot to bounce back into the contest.
The second game seemed to boost his confidence as Wen didn’t look back after that. He opened up a 7-4 lead and held on to the advantage even though Kashyap kept breathing down his neck coming as close as 17-18 at one stage.
NEW YORK — Martina Hingis earned her 11th Grand Slam women’s doubles title and her second at the US Open on Sunday.
At 34 years old and already a member of the International Tennis Hall of Fame, Hingis paired with Sania Mirza of India to beat Casey Dellacqua of Australia and Yaroslava Shvedova of Kazakhstan 6-3, 6-3 in the final.
The title comes 19 years after Hingis’ first major in doubles, at Wimbledon, and 17 years after the Swiss star won her other doubles championship at Flushing Meadows.
She won her first Grand Slam title when she was 15, and Martina Hingis, now pushing 35, is once again collecting major trophies at a fast pace. Just don’t ask her about a return to singles.
“We all felt like there was a little bit of nervousness, definitely, especially today because … it’s been a while, [19] years,” said Hingis, who won the 1998 US Open when teamed with Jana Novotna. “But it feels like it’s doing it all over again. It’s like I don’t think about, ‘OK, last time, it was [19] years ago.’ It’s what counts for me is, like, right now, today in this moment.”
Hingis also won the US Open mixed doubles title this year with Leander Paes.
Hingis, who reached No. 1 in the rankings and won five Grand Slam singles titles in the 1990s, initially quit tennis in 2002 because of foot and leg injuries, then rejoined the circuit full time in 2006. She announced her retirement again in 2007, when she was given a two-year suspension for testing positive for cocaine at Wimbledon. At the time, she denied taking the drug but did not appeal the ruling.
She returned to the tour in recent years as a coach and now is back playing, perhaps with an eye to competing at next year’s Rio Olympics.
But could she envision a return to singles competition?
“No thanks. I was just, like, practicing yesterday and I almost hurt myself. Oh, my God, it’s a long season, hard-court season,” Hingis said. “I [would] rather win, alongside Sania and Leander, Grand Slam titles than having to struggle with my body.”
Hingis was asked about the possibility of continuing to play into her late 40s, the way the woman she was named after, Martina Navratilova, did.
“Yeah, but I’m not Martina Navratilova,” Hingis replied.
Hingis and Mirza only began playing as a team in March, and now they’ve won a second Grand Slam trophy in a row, after Wimbledon in July.
“I think we trust each other on and off the court,” Mirza said. “I think that helps us through a lot of tough moments on the court. Obviously our games match, kind of complement each other, so to say, with her at the net and me at the back.”
Hingis and Mirza were seeded No. 1 in New York. Dellacqua and Shvedova were seeded fourth.
“With all the pressure on us, all the time, we’re really happy to come through,” Mirza said.
Said Shvedova: “They’re very tough to beat. Maybe we can beat them next time.”
Mirza thinks her victory will be a big deal back home in India.
“Grand Slams mean a lot, but obviously being a woman and being the first one to be able to achieve everything that I’m achieving is amazing for, not just India, for Indian women, but for Indian sports, for women to pick up sports in the country and that side of the world,” she said. “So I hope they’re proud.”
Leander Paes created history by winning the U.S. Open mixed doubles title with Swiss partner Martina Hingis and surpassed compatriot and former partner Mahesh Bhupathi’s record.
The 42-year-old Paes now has won nine Grand Slam mixed doubles titles, against Bhupathi’s eight.
The fourth seeded India-Swiss pair, edged past unseeded Americans Bethanie Mattek-Sands and Sam Querrey 6-4 3-6 10-7 in a tricky final to win their third Major title together this season.
Paes is now only behind legendary Martina Navratilova, who won 10 mixed doubles trophies. Of those 10, two came with Paes, when they won Australian Open and Wimbledon in 2003.
With this win, Paes and Hingis, who also won Australian Open and Wimbledon titles early this season, have become the first mixed doubles team since 1969 to win three Grand Slam mixed doubles titles in the same year.
It was Paes’ 17th Grand Slam title overall and Hingis’ 19th. Hingis has won four Grand Slam titles and all of them have come with Indians. She won her first mixed doubles trophy with Bhupathi when they won 2006 Australian Open.
Hingis is also in the contention in the Women’s Doubles with Sania Mirza with whom she won the Wimbledon this year. They are up against Yaroslava Shvedova of Kazakhstan and Casey Dellacqua of Australia.
Paes and Hingis broke Mattek-Sands at love to take a 2-1 lead in the opening set as the Swiss miss hit a forehand passing shot to secure the break. That bit of momentum was all they needed, as Paes easily closed the set out at 5-4 when Hingis hit a volley winner.
A lone break of serve also decided the second set, as Mattek-Sands hit two straight winners to break Hingis’ serve as the Americans led 3-1. Hingis saved three set points on her serve at 2-5, but Querrey easily held in the next game to send the contest into a deciding super tiebreak.
The unseeded Americans were cruising as they created a 4-1 cushion when they won both points on Hingis’ serve to grab the first mini-break. But Hingis and Paes took the mini-break back on Mattek-Sands’ serve at the next opportunity.
The crucial point of the match came at 7-7, when Paes blocked Querrey’s serve for a clean passing-shot winner. He then won both points on his serve to close out the match, hitting an overhead winner on their first match point and then lifting Hingis in celebration.
