Senior minister Gopal Rai was relieved of the charge of the Transport Department as sought by by him on health grounds and the portfolio has now been given to his cabinet colleague Satyendar Jain.
Last week, Rai requested Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal to relieve him from the responsibility of Transport Department on health grounds as he had recently undergone a major surgery.
Jain, who is known to be close to Kejriwal, already holds key portfolios of PWD, Health, Power and Home. The departments left with Rai now include Labour, Irrigation and Flood Control, General Administration Department (GAD), Development and Employment.
“The Lt Governor of National Capital Territory of Delhi with Chief Minister of National Capital Territory of Delhi is pleased to allocate portfolio of Transport Department to Satyendar Jain, Minister,” a notification issued by GAD yesterday said.
Jain had temporarily taken care of the transport department for about 20 days when Rai had gone under a surgery to get a bullet removed from his neck and then physiotherapy treatment in Hyderabad.
Rai yesterday said he had requested the Chief Minister to relieve him from the Transport Department portfolio as it had a very heavy workload.
He has been undergoing physiotherapy, which is expected to last three months, at the Indian Spinal Injuries Centre and is housed in the hospital.
The two phases of the odd-even scheme were implemented under the leadership of Rai as Transport Department was involved in the execution of the road-rationing plan on the ground.
Last month, he had announced Premium Bus Service Scheme to encourage the car users to leave their vehicles and use public transport.
However, the scheme came under scanner of Delhi Government’s Anti-Corruption Branch (ACB) as Lt Governor Najeeb Jung had refused to give his go-ahead to the scheme.PTI
He might have beaten Sachin Tendulkar’s record of being the youngest to 10,000 runs but England captain Alastair Cook says he is well aware that he is nothing like the “incredibly talented genius” from India and has a long way to go before matching up to him.
Cook became the 12th player in history to score 10,000 Test runs during England’s nine-wicket win against Sri Lanka at Durham last month but he is nearly 6,000 runs short of Tendulkar’s record aggregate of 15,921 runs from 200 matches.
The left-handed opener, 31, broke Tendulkar’s earlier record of being the youngest to score 10,000 Test runs by more than five months.
Cook, who has now scored 10,042 runs in 128 Tests, said Tendulkar’s record Test runs are a long way off for him as of now.
“Six thousand runs is a long way away. It was set by an incredibly talented genius. I’m no genius and Tendulkar is, so that is a long way ahead,” Cook said at the Lord’s ahead of the third Test against Sri Lanka.
“I want to play for England for as long as I can and at the moment I’m really enjoying it. I am really motivated and hungry and where that takes me who knows.”
“I’ve never lived my life by saying where I want to get to publicly. In private you have a few goals you want to try and achieve, but at the moment a lot of my goals are very immediate with this England team and as a captain that takes me away from personal milestones as a batter.”
The England skipper has 28 Test hundreds to his name at an average of 47, whereas Tendulkar bowed out of Test cricket with a record 51 centuries at an average of nearly 54.
Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar, the first man to score 10,000 Test runs, said last week that Cook had it in him to set a new aggregate record for most Test runs because of his age and the fact that England play more games over the long format than many other nations.
CBI today questioned Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh in connection with its probe into allegations of disproportionate assets amassed by him during his tenure as Union Minister.
CBI sources said the 81-year-old Chief Minister appeared for questioning at the agency headquarters here.
The agency had initiated an inquiry which had allegedly showed that as Union Minister during 2009-2012 (UPA rule), Singh had allegedly accumulated assets worth Rs 6.03 crore (approx) in his name and in the name of his family members which were found to be disproportionate to his known sources of income, CBI has said.
The FIR filed with a designated court in Delhi under the Prevention of Corruption Act, named Singh, his wife Pratibha Singh, LIC agent Anand Chauhan and Chunni Lal Chauhan.
The allegations have been refuted by Singh.
In a statement, CBI spokesperson had said it was further alleged that Singh had invested his unaccounted income in LIC policies in his name and in the name of his wife and other family members through a private person by showing the same as agricultural income.
“This was done by creation of a MoU purportedly dated June 15, 2008 for maintenance of an apple orchard, with the said private person (Chauhan) for a period of three years. The private person had allegedly deposited Rs five crore cash (approx) in his own bank account and debited the same through cheques for purchasing various LIC policies in their names,” CBI had said.
It had said Singh allegedly attempted to legitimize the same as agricultural income by filing revised Income Tax Returns in 2012.
“The agricultural income as claimed by him in his revised ITRs was not found to be tenable. The then Union Minister had allegedly accumulated other assets disproportionate to known sources of income,” CBI has alleged.PTI
The Aam Aadmi Party has demanded a court-monitored investigation into the allegations against former Maharashtra minister Eknath Khadse, who stepped down after a host of allegations including irregularities in a land deal.
“We are not happy with Khadse’s resignation. It appears that BJP wants to protect him. That is why when he addressed the press conference, he was flanked by two senior BJP leaders,” AAP leader Ashish Khetan said here.
“Why are they not registering FIRs in three cases against him. In all three cases there should be FIRs and there should be court-monitored investigation which is not happening,” he said.
“Everybody has a feeling that they are trying to protect him. They should put him behind bars and they should register cases and investigate thoroughly,” he said.
Responding to a question, Khetan said, in Maharashtra, if the second most powerful minister after CM, is so corrupt you can imagine what is happening in the government.
The senior BJP leader resigned on Saturday in wake of a series of allegations including irregularities in a land deal in Pune, getting calls allegedly from fugitive Dawood Ibrahim’s residence in Karachi on his phone besides the alleged bribe sought by his personal aide.
Following this, CM Devendra Fadnavis announced an inquiry by a retired high court judge into the allegations against Khadse, as sought by the senior leader himself.PTI

AAP has been demanding that the control over Delhi Police which directly reports to the Union Home Ministry, be handed over to the Delhi government.
Last month, the Delhi government had released a draft bill on full statehood to Delhi, seeking to bring police, land, municipal corporations and bureaucracy under its control, and invited suggestions from the public.
Kejriwal had slammed Delhi Police following the murder of 19-year-old Meenakshi who was stabbed to death in Central Delhi’s Anand Prabat area in July last year.
“The law and order situation is deteriorating in Delhi every day. Delhi Police comes under the Prime Minister. Either he should do something or Delhi Police should be handed over to the Delhi government,” he had said after meeting Meenakshi’s family members.
He had also said, “If the police is not answerable to the Delhi government then how will it be held accountable? Right now, Delhi Police is a law unto itself.

Selfies of Assamese youths, led by Manas Deka, accused by JNU student leader Kanhaiya Kumar of trying to “strangle” him on board of an aircraft in April, have been posted on a social networking site greeting BJP chief Amit Shah.
The brief encounter took place before Shah was to address a convention — ‘Pramod Mahajan Skill and Entrepreneurship Mission’, a Maharashtra government initiative on the lines of the Centre’s ‘Skill India’, at an auditorium here yesterday.
However, the delegation did not attend the function and left.
Deka later posted the selfies with Shah on his social media account.
On April 24, Kumar had alleged that Deka, working with a city-based software firm, had tried to strangle him on board a Pune-bound Jet Airways flight.
Mumbai Police had registered a non-cognisable offence on Kumar’s complaint. However, the allegations were reportedly described by the police as “untrue”.
Kumar had described Deka as a “strong BJP supporter” in a tweet after the incident.PTI
China’s sporting fraternity today paid rich tributes to Muhammad Ali, the heavyweight boxing legend and civil rights champion who passed away in the United States after a 32-year battle with Parkinson’s disease.
Ali, the world’s most-loved and known sporting hero, visited China in 1979 and then again in 1985. He was greeted with unbound love wherever he went.
During his 1979 China visit, Ali was greeted by then Chinese vice-premier Deng Xiaoping, who said to him: “You have deep feelings toward China. Very welcome to China and have a look around.”
“Boxing can also be a bridge which enhances mutual understanding and friendship between Chinese and American people,” Deng had said.
Ali’s motto – “Float like a butterfly, sting like a bee” – is well-known in China and he was hailed as a beacon to Chinese youth chasing their sporting dreams.
“He is an icon and a great man,” said China’s first-ever WBC champion Xiong Chaozhong. “He taught us how to fight, how to overcome hardships.”
Xiong recalled a meeting with Ali’s wife, Lonnie.
“Ali’s wife came to see me in a press conference after I won the WBC title on November 24, 2012, telling me that Mr Ali wanted me to be his student because he had promised Deng Xiaoping that he would teach China’s first professional champion if there would be one,” Xiong told state-run Xinhua news agency.
China’s two-time Olympic champion boxer Zou Shiming tearfully mourned the passing of Ali, vowing to win a professional title to honour the legendary boxer.
“I planned to go visit my idol Mr Muhammad Ali after winning a professional bout. But now, I can only pray he is at peace in heaven, and free from illness and pain,” the 2008 and 2012 Olympic champion posted on his Weibo account.
In a tearful interview, Zou said: “I am deeply grieving over the passing of the legend Mr Ali, for whom I have great respect. He has been a great inspiration to me.”
Chinese boxer Yang Lianhui hailed Ali as one of the most transformative persons in history.
“Both Chinese boxing and world boxing benefitted from Muhammad Ali’s talents,” said Yang.

Reacting to the resignation of Eknath Khadse from the state Cabinet today, Leader of Opposition in the Legislative Council and NCP leader, Dhananjay Munde, said action was also expected against other “tainted ministers”.
“It is important to see whether the government takes similar action against other tainted ministers,” said Munde, who was with the BJP before joining NCP.
“The MIDC land scam is a serious matter and a fair and thorough investigation should be done,” he said.
Meanwhile, local builder Hemant Gavande, who first flagged the questionable land deal in Bhosari involving Khadse’s family, said he would keep pursuing the case.
It was Gavande who had first alleged that Khadse’s wife and his son-in-law purchased a three-acre piece of land belonging to the Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC) at Bhosari near here at a throwaway price of Rs 3.75 crore from its original owner.
“Since he has resigned, I demand free and transparent probe in this matter…I will take the case to its logical conclusion,” Gavande said.
The senior BJP leader should “introspect about his misdeeds”, he said, welcoming Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis’s decision to appoint a retired High Court judge to probe the charges against Khadse.PTI
