Creating a unique history of valour and dedication to duty, one of the Special Forces Commandos of the Indian Army, Lance Naik Mohan Nath Goswami, killed ten terrorists in a short span of 11 days before making supreme sacrifice in continued fight against terror in Kashmir Valley on Thursday.
Lance Naik Goswami was killed at Hafruda forests in Kupwara district in fierce fire fight with terrorists, but not before the elimination of four of them. “A true soldier, he breathed his last in action,’’ said a defence ministry spokesperson Colonel S D Goswami at the Northern Command headquarters in Udhampur. Hailing from Indira Nagar village in Haldwani tehsil of Nainital, he is survived by his wife and a seven-year-old daughter.
Part of numerous successful counter terrorist operations in the state, Lance Naik Goswami had been actively involved in three such operations in which ten terrorists were killed and one captured alive in the last 11 days.
Giving details, the spokesperson said that in the first operation, three Lashkar-e-Taiba terrorists hailing from Pakistan were killed in Khurmur, Handwara on August 23.
He again volunteered for a second back-to-back operation in which three more Lashkar terrorists were killed and another Sajjad Ahmad alias Abu Ubed Ullah captured alive during the two day-long fierce fire fight in Rafiabad after a fierce fire fight on August 26-27. The apprehension of Sajjad Ahmad alias Abu Ubed Ullah, a resident of Muzzafargarh, proved to be a shot in the arm to establish Pakistan’s complicity in abetting terrorism in Jammu and Kashmir, the defence ministry spokesperson said.
Lance Naik Goswami, once again, volunteered to be part of an ongoing operation launched in the dense Hafruda forest near Kupwara, Kashmir. This proved to be his last operation but not before elimination of four terrorists in a heavy gun battle, the spokesperson pointed out.
He had volunteers to join Indian Army’s elite para commandos unit in 2002 and “went on to gain the reputation of being one of the toughest soldiers of his unit, no small feat in an outfit that boasts of being one among the best in the world’’, the spokesperson said. His mortal remains were flown by an IAF aircraft to Bareilly, from where they will be taken by an Army helicopter to Pant Nagar and onward to his native place where he will be cremated with full military honours, he added.
Welcoming the government’s decision to implement OROP, agitating ex-servicemen today announced withdrawal of their hunger strike but decided to continue their protest till all the “sticky” issues are resolved.
The ex-servicemen said revision of pension after a gap of five years as announced by the government is not at all acceptable to them, besides appointment of a one-man judicial commission to examine various aspects of one rank-one pension (OROP).
Addressing a press conference here, Maj Gen (Retd) Satbir Singh, leader of the association leading the agitation, said the protest will continue till four specific points raised by the ex-servicemen are not accepted by the government.
We urge all those who are on hunger strike to withdraw it as the PM has clarified on the issue of premature retirement. But our protest will continue till the government accepts four points raised by us,” he said. He said ex-servicemen may resume hunger strike again if the government fails to resolve the pending issues.
“We thank Prime Minister Narendra Modi for fulfilling the promise of one rank-one pension. We thank the defence minister but there are four issues to be resolved including the period of equalisation of pension,” Singh said.
The veterans, who have been pressing for one rank-one pension (OROP) for four decades, yesterday won a partial victory with the government announcing that it would implement it, but the veterans rejected the decision and decided to continue their agitation.

The High Court ordered CID probe in response to the petition filed by his mother Prabhaben Patel.
She had alleged that police took away her son on August 25 and beat him up at Bapunagar police station here which caused his death.
The second autopsy ordered by the HC showed that he died due to a severe head injury. Observing that prima facie it was a case of homicide (klling), the HC ordered a CID probe.

New York, Sep 5 (AFP) Rafael Nadal made his earliest US Open exit in a decade, suffering his first Grand Slam defeat after leading by two sets, while Serena Williams rallied to keep her calendar Slam dream alive.
Spanish eighth seed Nadal, whose 14 Slam titles include the 2010 and 2013 US Open crowns, fell victim to 32nd-seeded Italian Fabio Fognini 3-6, 4-6, 6-4, 6-3, 6-4 at Arthur Ashe Stadium yesterday.
Nadal had not lost so early on the New York hardcourts since a third-round ouster in 2005 by American James Blake.
The 29-year-old left-hander had been 151-0 in Slam matches when leading by two sets.
“He played great,” Nadal said. “It’s not that I lost. He wins. I’m not happy but I accept he was better. I didn’t play bad. I fight until the last point. It was not enough.”
Fognini imposed seven consecutive service breaks upon Nadal in the fourth and fifth sets, smacking 70 winners past the iconic star in a fantastic effort.
“I can’t describe how happy I am,” Fognini said. “It was very tough. To do it against Rafa, two sets down. It was an incredible match.”
Fognini, 32, booked a last-16 date with 18th-seeded Spaniard Feliciano Lopez, who eliminated Canadian 10th seed Milos Raonic 6-2, 7-6 (7/4), 6-3.
Nadal lost to Fognini on clay at Rio de Janeiro and Barcelona earlier this year, but had bounced back with a triumph in July’s Hamburg final.
It was Fognini’s first win in 18 tries on hardcourt against a top-10 rival and made him the first Italian in the US Open last 16 since Davide Sanguinetti in 2005.
Women’s world number one Williams, meanwhile, battled through mistakes and the tension of her quest for tennis history.
Williams fought back to defeat 101st-ranked US compatriot Bethanie Mattek-Sands 3-6, 7-5, 6-0 at Arthur Ashe Stadium and needs only four more triumphs to complete the first calendar Slam since Steffi Graf in 1988.
Williams, holder of all four major titles, also seeks her 22nd career Slam singles crown to match Graf’s Open Era record.
The 33-year-old American went to three sets for the 10th time in 24 Grand Slam matches this year and stayed perfect, eight of those fightbacks after first-set defeats.
“I’m not trying to live on the edge,” Williams said. “I don’t think I came out too slow. I think Bethanie came out really well. I had to adapt to her game and I finally got some rhythm going toward the end of the second set.

Bikaner (Raj), Sep 5 (PTI) Amid the controversy over ‘Santhara’, an 82-year-old woman, who publicly resumed the Jain religious ritual of voluntary fast unto death after the Supreme Court stayed ban on it by the Rajasthan High Court, passed away here today.
Badni Devi, who was on fast for over one month, breathed her last at 8 AM.
She quit food and was living only on little amount of water. She died in a way she had wished, family member Surendra Daga said.
“We pray for her soul. She died peacefully and it was the blessings of the God and we are happy at it,” he said.
Badni Devi, a resident of Gangashahar area, took the resolution of ‘Santhara’ on July 17 though the ritual was socially undertaken on July 25, Jain Mahasabha secretary of Bikaner Jain Lunkaran Chajed had said.
The octogenarian woman is survived by three sons, one daughter and grand children.
Earlier on August 10, when the Rajasthan High Court had held ‘Santhara’ as illegal making it punishable under section 306 and 309 of IPC related to abatement of suicide, she continued her fast albeit secretly and family members called it ‘tapasya’.
On August 31 the Supreme Court stayed the Rajasthan High Court decision declaring the religious ritual a penal offence.
Following the Supreme Court’s verdict, Badni Devi publicly resumed her ‘Santhara’.

A forensic test for the digital facial superimposition of Sheena turned positive. The police also also managed to identify the car which was used to transport the body after the murder.
The results of the digital facial superimposition and reconstruction of the skull, teeth, cheek bones have matched with those of Sheena’s pictures. This is a major shot in the arm for the Mumbai Police, which after the botch up by Pen police was struggling to identify the body.
Now it has been, to a great extent, ascertained that the body dumped in Pen area three years ago belonged to Sheena. The DNA test will also prove futile if the result is positive.
Sources claim that the forensic report submitted to Mumbai Police also says that the bones are that of a female, aged between 22 to 26 years, with height between 153cms o 160cms. The person was killed three to four years ago. This too matches up with the police theory.
In another breakthrough police managed to seize the Chevrolet Optra car, which was used to transport Sheena’s body after the killing in Mumbai. Her body was kept in the same car at a garage overnight and was transported to Pen the next morning for disposal. The car used to dump body also recovered Sheena Bora By Atir Khan and Sahil Joshi in New Delhi The car has been identified bearing number MH 01 MA 2605. It originally belonged to AM Motors but had changed many hands and sold off to two owners later.
Sources also revealed that Indrani had asked her female employee to make a Hotmail account in the name of Sheena Bora. This e-mail id was made in May 2012 and was used to send mails to Mikhail, Vidhi and Peter till 2014.
However no e-mails or messages were sent to Rahul as Indrani had sent text messages to him from Sheena’s mobile saying that she doesn’t want to keep any relationship with him.
Sources said investigations have also revealed that both Sanjeev and Indrani had allegedly strangulated Sheena in the bylanes of National College and thereafter they went to Peter’s Worli residence to keep the body overnight in the garage.
Before leaving for the disposal of the body the next morning, Indrani had allegedly, in an attempt to make the body appear fresh, combed dead Sheena’s hair and applied lipstick on her lips. The body was made to sit in the middle on the rear seat. Indrani had also paid the driver for being an accomplice in the crime.
Meanwhile at Khar Police station Sanjeev’s daughter Vidhi along with Peter Mukerjea was quizzed. Vidhi was called for questioning for the first time on Friday. The police also questioned Indrani’s first partner Siddharth. The police have not ruled out either personal relationships or financial rivalry as the motive of the murder.
A body guard of a businessman from Kolkata was called to Mumbai for investigation. The phone number of the body guard was traced from the accused mobile. It is claimed that the businessman had a brief stint of affair with Indrani in Kolkata at some point of time in her life.
