New Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull promised to focus on stability and improving a faltering economy as the public woke up on Tuesday to their fourth leader in two years.
The Liberal Party voted in a secret ballot late on Monday to oust Tony Abbott as the leader of the senior party in a ruling conservative coalition in favour of Turnbull, a multi-millionaire former tech entrepreneur who is popular with the electorate.
“I’m filled with optimism and we will be setting out in the weeks ahead … more of those foundations that will ensure our prosperity in the years ahead,” Turnbull told reporters as he headed to parliament on Tuesday before being sworn in.
Abbott was deposed barely two years into his three-year term after months of opinion polls that showed his popularity with the public near rock bottom as Australia’s $1.5 trillion economy struggles to cope with the end of a once-in-a-century mining boom.
Turnbull had previously been unpalatable to his party’s right wing because of his progressive views on climate change, same-sex marriage and making Australia a republic.
However, Abbott’s dismal performance and over-reliance on slogans to sell his major policies, including a hardline approach to refugees, wore down internal opposition to Turnbull.
Abbott, in his last address as prime minister on Tuesday, pledged to make the leadership transition as smooth as possible but also expressed concern that “a revolving door prime ministership can’t be good for our country”.
Australia has in recent years been convulsed by backroom machinations and party coups that have shaken public and business confidence in government.
“There will be no wrecking, no undermining, and no sniping,” Abbott told reporters.
TURNBULL A BIGGER THREAT
Turnbull’s ascension is seen by many political analysts as restoring stability because he presents a more formidable foe for the opposition Labor Party at elections due in about a year.
“If the election was held yesterday, the opposition would have won. If it was held today they would lose,” said Peter Chen, a senior lecturer in government at Sydney University.
“Malcolm Turnbull is much more of a threat to the leader of the opposition than Tony Abbott was,” Chen said. “It looks like, unless things really change, the government will get a second term in office.”
There is also continuity in the form of Foreign Minister Julie Bishop
hop, who won the party room vote to retain her additional position as deputy party leader.
However, significant changes are expected when Turnbull, who had been toppled as Liberal Party leader by Abbott in opposition in 2009, unveils his ministry later this week.
Current Treasurer Joe Hockey, who has been battling a backlash against a deeply unpopular budget, and Defence Minister Kevin Andrews, who is overseeing a A$50 billion ($35.70 billion) submarine tender, are both expected to be replaced.
Australian Chamber of Commerce and Industry chief executive Kate Carnell welcomed the promise of more collegiate and co-operative government, urging Turnbull to undertake reforms to boost productivity and competitiveness.
Australia’s revolving door leadership also plagued the Labor Party when it was in power.
Labor’s Kevin Rudd, elected prime minister with a strong mandate in 2007, was deposed by his deputy, Julia Gillard, in 2010 amid the same sort of poll numbers that Abbott faced. Gillard was in turn deposed by Rudd ahead of the 2013 elections won by Abbott.
On August 15, Saudi Arabian security engineer Mohammed Qahtani won the title of Toastmasters International World Champion of Public Speaking. He survived seven rounds of a competition that lasted six months and included 33,000 competitors from around the world.
He and nine other finalists competed at the Toastmasters annual convention in Las Vegas, and he took home first place for his speech “The Power of Words,”
He immediately gets the audience on his side.
Qahtani starts his speech with a sight gag, pretending to consider lighting up a cigarette before the audience’s reaction convinces him not to. He transitions from this into a sober defense of the tobacco industry before saying, straight faced, that all of the facts and figures he cited were made up. The audience then roars with laughter.
“When you get an audience laughing, you’ve got them on your side,” Qahtani says.
However you choose to engage an audience, by getting them to laugh, cheer, gasp, or any other emotional reaction, it’s important to get them on your side from the beginning. Qahtani says it can be easy for a speaker to forget that an audience wants a performer to do well, and is waiting to be entertained.
He doesn’t lose sight of his message.
The punchline of his fake defense of Big Tobacco is that you can convince people of a lie, even an absurd one, if you deliver it in the proper way.
Every presentation needs to have a thesis, a message that the audience is convinced of and will take with them. Qahtani’s message is straightforward: We must be conscious of the power our words can have over other people, for better or worse.
His speech is a series of stories: why a pseudo-defense of smoking can be convincing, how he taught his young son a lesson, why academics have a difficult time imparting the dangers of global warming, and how a single phone call ruined a friend’s life. Each of these stories are variations on a theme, leading to a satisfying conclusion that ties them all together.
He makes it personal.
A friend once told Qahtani, “When you’re on the stage, the most important thing is the audience. Don’t care about how you look, where you are on the stage, how you sound – just care about the audience.” Qahtani has used this advice to stay focused on how his audience reacts, and rather than going through the motions, he adjusts his delivery depending on how his audience engages with his material.
In “The Power of Words,” he cheats a little bit with the story about a friend dying from an overdose. The story, about a promising young man’s tragic path to self-destruction partially due to an estranged relationship with his father, is real, but it’s a story Qahtani borrowed. He says that if he presented it as a secondhand story it would lose some of its immediacy.
If you’re giving a corporate presentation or TED Talk, you shouldn’t play with poetic license, but you definitely should use anecdotes that add life to your topic.
He uses his strengths to overcome his weaknesses.
Qahtani grew up with a stutter and deals with it occasionally. He says that even though the stage empowers him and rids him of the impediment, his vocal delivery will never be his strong point, and neither will his stage presence. But that’s fine.
A fellow Toastmasters member once told Qahtani, “Some people are strong with their words, some people are strong with their voice, some people are strong with their stage presence. Your strength is humor. Use it.”
There were competitors who had better delivery and more refined movements on stage, but Qahtani got the audience to focus their attention on what he did well.
He ends on a hopeful note.
Qahtani opened his speech with humor to get the audience laughing and relaxed, but he would have fallen into a stand-up act if he didn’t transition into moving personal anecdotes. Similarly, if he kept his entire speech heavy, his audience would have felt depressed or even bored rather than satisfied.
However you determine your speech will flow, Qahtani said, it’s important that you always leave your audience with a feeling of hope. They need to feel empowered by what you just told them.
Rumour mills are abuzz with the speculations that Hrithik’s ex-wife Sussanne Khan set to remarry.
According to the reports, Sussanne is getting married to one of Hrithik’s closest friends. If rumours are to be believed, this friend is the reason behind Hrithik and Sussane’s separation.
Hrithik and Sussanne tied the knot in December 2000. They separated in December 2013 and they filed for divorce with mutual consent in May 2014. A family court in Bandra finalised the divorce in November 2014.
After the termination of their 13-year-long marriage it was speculated that Sussanne will get together with Rock On star Arjun Rampal, who was also close to the couple. But earlier this year, Meher Rampal and Arjun dismissed rumours of their divorce.
Father to two sons, Hrithik is still flaunting his ‘single’ status though he is allegedly being linked to Queen star Kangana Ranaut.

Mr. Perfectionist aka Aamir Khan has moved to Ludhiana to begin shooting his new movie Dangal.
Dangal is loosely based on the life of legendary wrestler Mahavir Phogat and his daughters who were wrestlers too.
To be able to understand and adapt the living manners of Haryanvis and the way people wrestle in the akhadas, the PK star will camp in Ludhiana for over two months, reports Jagran.com
The crew has rented two houses in Gujarwal, some 25 km from Ludhiana, which will stand in for Aamir’s house in the movie. Apart from that, villages near by will be given a makeover to look suitable for the story.
NEW YORK — Martina Hingis earned her 11th Grand Slam women’s doubles title and her second at the US Open on Sunday.
At 34 years old and already a member of the International Tennis Hall of Fame, Hingis paired with Sania Mirza of India to beat Casey Dellacqua of Australia and Yaroslava Shvedova of Kazakhstan 6-3, 6-3 in the final.
The title comes 19 years after Hingis’ first major in doubles, at Wimbledon, and 17 years after the Swiss star won her other doubles championship at Flushing Meadows.
She won her first Grand Slam title when she was 15, and Martina Hingis, now pushing 35, is once again collecting major trophies at a fast pace. Just don’t ask her about a return to singles.
“We all felt like there was a little bit of nervousness, definitely, especially today because … it’s been a while, [19] years,” said Hingis, who won the 1998 US Open when teamed with Jana Novotna. “But it feels like it’s doing it all over again. It’s like I don’t think about, ‘OK, last time, it was [19] years ago.’ It’s what counts for me is, like, right now, today in this moment.”
Hingis also won the US Open mixed doubles title this year with Leander Paes.
Hingis, who reached No. 1 in the rankings and won five Grand Slam singles titles in the 1990s, initially quit tennis in 2002 because of foot and leg injuries, then rejoined the circuit full time in 2006. She announced her retirement again in 2007, when she was given a two-year suspension for testing positive for cocaine at Wimbledon. At the time, she denied taking the drug but did not appeal the ruling.
She returned to the tour in recent years as a coach and now is back playing, perhaps with an eye to competing at next year’s Rio Olympics.
But could she envision a return to singles competition?
“No thanks. I was just, like, practicing yesterday and I almost hurt myself. Oh, my God, it’s a long season, hard-court season,” Hingis said. “I [would] rather win, alongside Sania and Leander, Grand Slam titles than having to struggle with my body.”
Hingis was asked about the possibility of continuing to play into her late 40s, the way the woman she was named after, Martina Navratilova, did.
“Yeah, but I’m not Martina Navratilova,” Hingis replied.
Hingis and Mirza only began playing as a team in March, and now they’ve won a second Grand Slam trophy in a row, after Wimbledon in July.
“I think we trust each other on and off the court,” Mirza said. “I think that helps us through a lot of tough moments on the court. Obviously our games match, kind of complement each other, so to say, with her at the net and me at the back.”
Hingis and Mirza were seeded No. 1 in New York. Dellacqua and Shvedova were seeded fourth.
“With all the pressure on us, all the time, we’re really happy to come through,” Mirza said.
Said Shvedova: “They’re very tough to beat. Maybe we can beat them next time.”
Mirza thinks her victory will be a big deal back home in India.
“Grand Slams mean a lot, but obviously being a woman and being the first one to be able to achieve everything that I’m achieving is amazing for, not just India, for Indian women, but for Indian sports, for women to pick up sports in the country and that side of the world,” she said. “So I hope they’re proud.”
Reports are streaming in about Jackie and Ayesha Shroff’s daughter Krishna having gone ‘topless’ in pictures she posted online.
Far from being sleazy and far removed from “topless”, the pictures are very aesthetically conceived and shot to display Krishna as a potential star. Since those pics went viral, there are rumours of Tiger’s sister following her brother into an acting career.
Says Krishna, “It was just a photoshoot that my best friend and I did for fun in my bedroom with nobody to share the experience with, except ourselves. My friend is a photographer who is building her portfolio to further her career. The two of us like to have fun with the camera and just shoot the mood of the moment. And since I like to put up aesthetic pictures for my private Instagram page, it’s a win-win situation for both my photographer friend and me. As simple as that!”
Meanwhile, Krishna is keen on working behind-the-scenes. She affirms, “I’d love to be part of Bollywood. It’s an amazing industry that’s given my family so much. However, I am not looking at an acting career. At least, not any time soon.”
She recently completed a documentary Black Sheep on the trans-gender community which she shot on her own.
Swami Omji makes headlines again this time by slapping back a woman astrologer live a televised program.
These two were both panelist on a T.V program. During Delhi elections Swami Omji had created a storm by saying that he would kill Kejriwal. Real News of India was he first to upload the video on you tube.
This time however, things really got out of hand on a recent show that was discussing the controversy surrounding Radhe Maa. When the Hindu Mahasabha’s Om Ji Maharaj decided to cast aspersions on another astrologer’s character, she absolutely lost it and slapped him on live TV. Not one for taking things lying down, the religious leader hit back.
The YouTube description of the video says: “Deepa Sharma, a self proclaimed astrologer today slapped another self proclaimed Dhram Guru Om Ji Maharaj on IBN7’s evening debate show ‘Aaj Ka Mudda. Most deplorable incident on LIVE TV. The honourable guests are not expected to do this.”
