A Bajrang Dal activist who actively participated in a campaign that led to the closure of a slaughter house in the Moodabidri region of Dakshina Kannada was hacked to death on October 9. Police have so far arrested eight Muslim men — four on Tuesday and four last Sunday — calling it a “revenge killing”, the result of “communal rivalry”.
Police said 29-year-old Prashant Poojary, a flower-seller, was hacked to death outside his shop, some 40 km from Mangalore. The attack was carried out by a group of six men who came on motorcycles wearing masks and wielding knives.

Before he died, Prashant revealed the identities of four of his assailants to his father Anand Poojary, police said.
Mangalore police commissioner S Murugan identified the persons arrested Sunday as Mohammed Hanif (36),
Mohammed Ilyas (27), Ibrahim Liyaqat (26), and Abdul Rashid (39), all residents of Dakshina Kannada district.
On Tuesday, four more were arrested — Mohammed Sharif (42), Mustafa Kavoor (28), Mohammed Mustafa (25), and Kabeer (28).
Police claimed Mohammed Hanif and the four arrested Tuesday carried out the attack on the morning of October 9.
Before he died, Prashant named Hanif and one Imtiaz, who is said to be absconding, as the main assailants. Police said a search was on for more individuals involved in the attack. It is suspected that some have crossed over to Kerala.
“Prashant Poojary was actively involved with a pro-Hindu outfit. There were many clashes and he was attacked out of a communal grudge,’’ police commissioner Murugan said.
Police said Hanif and Imtiaz used to work at a slaughter house in Moodabidri that had been forcibly shut down by Bajrang Dal activists, including Poojary, a few days before the murder.
Police suspect the role of a member of a radical Muslim youth outfit in the attack. “We have no proof of their links to any outfit. One of the motives for the murder was Poojary’s interventions to disturb cattle trafficking,” Murugan said.
Hanif and the others directly involved in the Poojary murder are also involved in a case at Handelu on September 9 and another assault case in Permude on October 3,” he said.
In recent years, the Dakshina Kannada region has been witness to several incidents of violence over cow-politics.
Nalin Kumar Kateel, BJP MP from Dakshina Kannada, said the murder was directly linked to the shutting down of a slaughter house in Moodabidri by a group of activists led by Poojary.
“After the illegal slaughterhouse was shut down, one of the accused, Hanif, made a provocative speech at the Moodabidri bus stand saying revenge would be exacted against all involved in the raid on the slaughter house. Prashant was murdered a few days later at the spot where the protest was held,’’ Nalin Kateel said.
Situation in Ballabhgarh became tense on Wednesday after the residents of Sunped village refused to cremate bodies of two Dalit children who were burnt alive after some persons from an upper caste set their house afire while they were sleeping.
Staging protest and blocking the Ballabgarh-Faridabad highway, villagers have also threatened to convert into Islam if all the accused are not arrested and their demands are met.
Vaibhav, a two-and-a-half years old, and his sister, 11-month-old Divya were burnt alive, while their mother Rekha suffered 70% burns and has been referred to Delhi for treatment. The bodies of Dalit children were brought from Delhi amid a large contingent of police deployed to avert law & order situation.
Meanwhile, the Haryana Government has ordered a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the incident of a Dalit family being burnt in Sunped, a village near Faridabad, and suspended the eight erring police officials
Earlier in the day, Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi visited the family and accused the Prime Minister, Harayana Chief Minister, the BJP and RSS of practising “politics of crushing” those who are weak which results in such incidents.
“This is an attitude shared by the Prime Minister, Chief Minister of the state and the entire BJP and RSS. The attitude is if somebody is weak, he can be crushed. What you have seen is the result of this attitude,” Gandhi said.
So far, four people have been arrested in connection with the case on the basis of the preliminary investigation.

The minority commission of Mumbai will take up the matter of the brutality exhibited to Asif by the Police. In this context it is likely to summon Mumbai Police. The possibility of C.P Javed being summoned seems pretty strong.
The commission has termed the act of the Police brutal and illegal. The Chairman of minority commission MR Mohammed Hussain Khan has assured the victim’s family for justice and that legal action will taken against the police involved in this brutality.
Asif was badly thrashed by the cops in the police station a few days ago where witness say that Asif was totally innocent. The manner in which Asif was brought to the police station was illegal. The thrashing continued till the next early morning which has left Asif with all bruises and injuries all over his body.
Fawad Khan and Mahira Khan are popular superstars in Pakistan. Back in India, Fawad is already a rage with his first Bollywood film Khoobsurat opposite Sonam Kapoor cementing his position in the industry. On the other hand, Mahira is all set to make her grand Bolly debut opposite Shah Rukh Khan in Rahul Dholakia’s anticipated film Raees next year. But there’s one big hurdle for the two Pakistani actors. Shiv Sena claims they won’t allow any Pakistani cricketer or actor put foot on Maharashtrian soil.
Shiv Sena had previously fought a similar battle with Shah Rukh Khan. In the 2010 IPL auction, none of the franchises picked up any Pakistani players. This led Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan to comment: “I think it’s actually humiliating to me as a KKR owner that this has happened. We are known to be good, we are known to invite everyone, and we should have. And if there were any issues, they should have been put out earlier so that everything could happen respectfully.”
This led to massive protests across the state as they attacked theatres which were screening SRK’s My Name is Khan. The erstwhile Maharashtra government – Congress-NCP – deployed 21,000 police officers to guard over 63 cinemas screening the film.
Quite unlike other Bollywood actors, SRK refused to bow down and apologise. “I request everybody to leave the film alone and deal with what I have said as an individual. I have no idea what I am supposed to apologise for. If I am in wrong I would like to apologise but someone needs to explain to me what is wrong,” he told reporters in London.
After Shiv Sena’s protest at BCCI office, Kasuri book release function and Ghulam Ali concerts, films starring Pakistan artistes have become latest target of the political outfit. In the last few weeks, Sena has hit national headlines with its protest against Pakistani ghazal singer Ghulam Ali’s concerts in Pune and Mumbai (which were consequently cancelled), ink attack on former BJP ideologue Sudheendra Kulkarni and opposition to release of former Pakistan foreign minister Khurshid Kasuri’s book, as well as protest at BCCI office over the planned visit by Pakistan Cricket Board chief.
Chitrapat Sena general secretary Akshay Bardapurkar told a leading website, “We are not really bothered about who is signing these Pakistanis in their film. Karan Johar, Farhan Akhtar, Shah Rukh Khan etc. are responsible citizens and they should not cast Pakistanis in their film.”
Fawad has already wrapped shooting for KJo’s Kapoor & Sons which will release early next year. He is currently filming for another Dharma film- Ae Dil Hai Mushkil where he’s paired with Aishwarya Rai Bachchan. Mahira on the other hand will be shooting with SRK for Raees, which releases next year Eid. But given that Shiv Sena has already started protesting against Pakistani actors and actresses, will Fawad and Mahira’s Bollywood projects suffer the brunt of it?
Mumbai,October 3, 2015:
Eros International’s ‘Aligarh’, the latest film from National award-winning filmmaker Hansal Mehta, has been selected as the opening film at the 17th Jio MAMI Mumbai Film Festival on October 30th 2015. This pivotal film marks the first time that a Hindi film will open the festival since 1997, the inaugural year of the Jio MAMI Mumbai Film Festival.
Set in a small town in Uttar Pradesh from which the film takes its name, ‘Aligarh’ is the story of a professor (Manoj Bajpayee) fired for his sexuality and a young journalist (Rajkummar Rao) who tells his story to the world. Based on true events, the film follows Dr. S R Siras, a professor at the Aligarh Muslim University who, when discovered to be homosexual, was fired from his position. The film depicts the unlikely friendship between Dr. Siras and a reporter investigating his first big story, a relationship that will change them both forever.
Aligarh has been selected to screen at the 20th Busan International Film Festival in South Korea and the 59th BFI London Film Festival, this October. This will mark the first time in almost two decades that a Hindi film will open the Jio MAMI Mumbai Film Festival.
“I am overjoyed that Aligarh, my first film about a city other than Mumbai is the opening film of the Jio MAMI Mumbai Film Festival. This is a befitting reward for a team that has worked selflessly to make a film they are passionate about. This festival holds a very special place in my heart as it began a journey of awards for Shahid which was until then an unheralded dark horse in a year of sparkling indies. We (Eros International, my team and me) are looking forward to the night and to sharing this special film with the amazing MAMI audience,” said Hansal Mehta, who won the National Award for Best Direction in 2013 with his critically acclaimed Shahid.
Producer Sunil Lulla, Managing Director, Eros International added, “We are delighted at the selection of Aligarh for this recognition at a significant film platform like Jio MAMI Mumbai Film Festival. This strengthens our belief at Eros International in backing the vision of directors like Hansal who tell meaningful, humane stories through their films.”
Upon announcing the decision to open the festival with Aligarh, Anupama Chopra, Festival Director, said, “Aligarh is a powerful film that tells an important story on a sensitive subject. Hansal Mehta has a unique ability to tell uncommon human stories on the celluloid screen. Our mission is to showcase exciting and thought-provoking stories and I am sure our audience will enjoy our festival opener.”
Hansal Mehta’s illustrious career began in television, where he directed the cooking show Khana Khazana (1993–2000) starring Sanjeev Kapoor. Mehta made his feature film debut with Jayate (1999), which screened at the International Film Festival of India in Hyderabad as part of the Indian Panorama (1999-2000). He followed up his debut with the cult hit Dil Pe Mat Le Yaar in 2000, and spent the next decade making feature length and short films. He is best known for his moving biopic Shahid in 2013. The film, starring Rajkummar Rao, chronicles the life of Shahid Azmi, a human rights lawyer murdered in 2010. Mehta and Rao continued to collaborate in Mehta’s next film, City Lights, an adaptation of Metro Manila, a British independent film.
The 17th Jio MAMI’s Mumbai Film Festival will be held in Mumbai from October 29th to November 5th 2015. The film screenings will take place at PVR Versova, PVR Citi Mall, Andheri, PVR LP, Phoenix Mills and Regal – Colaba. To attend the festival, viewers can register online at http://in.bookmyshow.com/mami/ or visit registration counters at the festival venues listed above.
Along with Chairperson Kiran Rao and Festival Director Anupama Chopra, the members of the new Board of Trustees of MAMI are Filmmakers Farhan Akhtar, Karan Johar and Vikramaditya Motwane, Actors Riteish Deshmukh and Deepika Padukone, Mr. Anand Mahindra, Chairman & MD, The Mahindra Group, Mr. Ajay Bijli, Chairman and MD, PVR Ltd, Mr. Siddharth Roy Kapur, MD, Disney and Mr. Manish Mundra, Founder and CEO, Drishyam Films. These eminent personalities, outstanding achievers in their respective fields, are bringing together their expertise and experience to give Mumbai and India a bigger, better and even more exciting 17th edition of the Jio MAMI Mumbai Film Festival.

ABOUT JIO MAMI
Mumbai – the financial capital of India is also the epicentre of the Indian film industry. The city plays such a major role in production and dissemination of Indian films and television programs that it is widely known by its acronym ‘Bollywood’. In 1997, a group of film industry stalwarts headed by late Hrishikesh Mukherjee founded the Mumbai Academy of Moving Image (MAMI) as a not-for-profit Trust. Their main objective was to organize an annual International Film Festival of which the film industry and the country could be proud . MAMI has been organizing the festival for the last 16 years and aims to foster a climate of good cinema. MAMI engages people from all walks of life across the city and country who enjoy and love good cinema. It is Mumbai’s only film festival that is entirely created and run by film professionals and a group of members from corporate India. Appreciation of good cinema, stripped of all the limiting labels of art and commercial, can only come about through exposure to the best of films the world has to offer. The Festival is the first step in that direction.
In their Mission Statement in 1997, the MAMI Board of Trustees said, “We feel it is the need of the hour to disseminate and inculcate good cinema among Indian audiences. The only way to achieve this is to celebrate cinema by hosting an International Film Festival in Mumbai, India’s film and entertainment capital. MAMI (Mumbai Academy of Moving Image) is committed to start Mumbai’s first independent international film festival organised by practicing film makers.”
Nitish Kumar on Tuesday asked Prime Minister Narendra Modi to bring back ‘purane din’ (old days) of the people, as the Bihar chief minister hit back at the BJP, which blamed him for the rising prices of pulses, and asked why states ruled by it also had the same rates.
“I feel like laughing at Union ministers blaming me for skyrocketing prices of pulses. If it was so, the price of pulses should have been Rs 200 per kg only in Bihar.”
“Why it is selling at Rs 200 per kg in Gujarat, Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh?” Kumar wondered addressing an election rally at Nalanda, his home district, in favour of minister Shrawan Kumar.
Union Agriculture minister Radha Mohan Singh and Food minister Ramvilas Paswan today addressed a press conference and blamed Kumar for hike in prices of pulses.
In a bid to present Centre’s stand on the price rise, the two ministers blamed Kumar for decline in production of pulses in Bihar in recent years and also the state government’s failure to utilise “price stabilisation fund.” “Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Delhi and West Bengal which used the ‘Price Stabilisation Fund’, are selling pulses at Rs 120 to Rs 130 per kg through retail outlets,” Singh said.
Slamming Narendra Modi government for “skyrocketing” price of pulses, Kumar sarcastically asked the Prime Minister to “keep your ‘achche din’ with you and return people their ‘purane din’ (old days).”
Seeking to make escalating rate of pulses a poll issue in Bihar, Kumar said pulses called “poor man’s meat” has vanished from plate of common man.
Kumar, who has been declared as the face of grand alliance in the Bihar poll, also raked up issue of ‘Bihari’ and ‘Bahri’ (outsider) against NDA, which is fighting the elections in the name of Modi, and exhorted people to “bid goodbye to outsiders as people have a better choice in him as a Bihari.”
Syrian President Bashar al-Assad thanked Russian President Vladimir Putin for his military support during a visit to Moscow, according to a transcript of their meeting published on the Kremlin website.
At the meeting, Putin said Russia was also ready to help with a political solution in Syria, and would work closely on that with other world powers who want a peaceful solution to Syria’s prolonged conflict.
“I would like to express enormous gratitude to the whole leadership of the Russian Federation and to the Russian people for the help they are giving Syria,” the transcript quoted Assad as saying
Thank you for standing up for the unity of Syria, and its independence,” he said. “Those political steps that have been taken by the Russian Federation since the start of the crisis have not allowed events in Syria to develop following a tragic scenario.”
Putin said that positive developments on the military front in Syria would provide a basis for a long-term political solution, involving all political forces, ethnic and religious groups.
“We are ready to make our contribution not only in the course of military actions in the fight against terrorism, but during the political process. This will, of course, be in close contact with other world powers and with countries of the region which are interested in a peaceful resolution of the conflict,” Putin said, according to the transcript.

Justifying the act of splattering ink on Jammu and Kashmir MLA Engineer Rashid, the founder of the Hindu Sena, Vishnu Gupta, said his organisation works on the agenda of establishing a ‘Hindu Rashtra’, and anyone who opposes it, would not be spared.
“The Hindu Sena, founded in 2011, works on the agenda of the establishment of a Hindu Rashtra in the nation, the construction of the Ram Mandir and the abolishment of Article 370, which gives special status to Jammu and Kashmir etc,” Vishnu Gupta told ANI.
Having its headquarters in New Delhi, the organisation claims to have numerous units in at least seven states, including Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Odisha, Assam, Manipur and New Delhi.
Around 50,000 people are online connected to the organisation and we have around 10,000 workers in the field,” he added.
Vishnu Gupta, who started as a Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) worker, said he had also worked for the Bhagat Singh Kranti Sena (BSKS), but left it in 2012.
“I had protested against writer-activist Arundhati Roy after she had expressed her views on Kashmir in her address at the Indian Habitat Centre in 2011. However, the BJP had not supported us and that’s when I left BSKS. I had also worked with the Bharatiya Vidyarthi Sena, which is the student wing of Shiv Sena. But in 2010, I had resigned from it, because I was against their ideology of attacking North Indians in Maharashtra,” he added.
Gupta said the Hindu Sena, founded in 2011, was registered this year, and has the registration number DL-10 August2015/1720.
On 8 January 2014, the Hindu Sena along with the Sri Ram Sena and the Bajrang Dal attacked the Aam Aadmi Party’s (AAP) Kaushambi office after warning Arvind Kejriwal to expel senior AAP leader Prashant Bhushan over latter’s controversial remarks on the contentious Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) in the Kashmir Valley. Bhushan had called for a referendum as a likely medium to gauge whether AFSPA was indeed needed in valley.
The organisation had also held a protest outside The Indian Express office on January 6, 2014, against what they called its “anti-national” coverage of the Pakistani boat incident.
“The reportage of January 3 edition of The Indian Express says the occupants of the Pakistani vessel were not terrorists. This is like speaking the language of Pakistan,” said Gupta.
