Prime Minister Narendra Modi today condoled the demise of Lance Naik Hanamanthappa Koppad, who was extricated alive six days after an avalanche hit his post in Siachen Glacier, saying he has left “us sad and devastated”.
“He leaves us sad & devastated. RIP Lance Naik Hanamanthappa. The soldier in you remains immortal. Proud that martyrs like you served India,” Modi tweeted.
The soldier died today, three days after he was miraculously rescued alive from beneath tonnes of snow at a height of 19,600 feet after the February 3 avalanche hit.
The 33-year-old soldier of the 19th Battalion of Madras Regiment is survived by his wife Mahadevi Ashok Bilebal and two-year-old daughter Netra Koppad.
A resident of village Betadur in Dharwad district of Karnataka, Koppad had joined the army 13 years back.
The condition of Koppad, who was admitted to Army Research and Referral Hospital here on February 9, had deteriorated yesterday. (AGENCIES)
India tennis players ruled the roost in the 12th South Asian Games by picking up all the gold medals on offer on the fourth and penultimate day of the event here today.
Indians won gold in women’s singles, men’s doubles and mixed doubles to completely dominate the event at the All Assam Tennis Association Grounds here.
All the final matches today were all-Indian affairs, showing the complete domination by the home players.
In the men’s doubles, Ramkumar Ramanathan and Vijay Prasanth defeated Divij Sharan and Sanam Singh 6-3 6-4 to give the country the first gold and silver of the day.
Ankita Rana then won the second gold for Indian in women’s singles in another all-Indian final. Raina easily beat Prerna Bhambri 6-1 6-0 in the final.
Ankita then paired up with Divij Sharan to win gold in mixed doubles after beating another Indian combine of Sanam Singh and Prarthana Thombre 6-2 7-6(3) in the final.
Tomorrow’s men’s singles and women’s doubles finals will also be all-Indian affairs. The pair of Rishika Sunkara and Natasha Palha will take on the duo of Prarthana Thombre and Sharrmadaa Baluuishika in the women’s doubles final.
The two Indian pairs beat their respective opponents in the semifinals today.
In men’s singles final tomorrow, India’s Saketh Myneni will take on Ramkumar Ramanathan.
Myneni beat Pakistan’s Aisam ul-haq Qureshi in the first semifinal 6-2 6-1 today, while Ramanathan defeated Shamal Dissanayake 6-4 7-5 in the other last four match today.PTI
BCCI secretary Anurag Thakur today said “no country should feel insecure” about playing in India amid reports that Pakistan has proposed to play its matches in the upcoming World T20 at a neutral venue citing security concerns.
“BCCI will organise the World Cup in the nicest possible way and will provide every team with highest protection.
Earlier also we have hosted many World Cups and international matches and I don’t think any country should feel insecure here,” Thakur told reporters here.
Pakistan’s cricket chief Shaharyar Khan had earlier stated that a proposal was sent to play their World Twenty20 matches on neutral venues next month in the event Islamabad does not allow the team to tour India.
The 41-year-old Thakur said that it was entirely up to Pakistan to decide whether they wanted to play the World T20 in India or not.
“Bilateral series is totally a different topic but in the World Cup teams from across the world will come and participate. Pakistan is one among those 16 teams and the Indian government will provide complete security to all the teams. I think all the qualifying teams should come and participate in the World Cup. India is ready and if any country has some issues then they need to decide about it,” he said.
The PCB had initially hinted that its side might withdraw from the upcoming event if the Pakistan government did not permit them to tour India.
Shaharyar later added that they had also made a proposal during the recent ICC Board meeting in Dubai that Pakistan be allowed to play their matches at neutral venues in case the government’s decision is not favourable.
India is scheduled to host the mega-event from March 8 to April 3

The Commerce Ministry is hopeful that its Finance counterpart will look at the submissions made by it positively regarding tax benefits for the special economic zones (SEZs), a top official today said.
“We hope… We have made our submissions,” Commerce Secretary Rita Teaotia told reporters when asked whether the ministry has taken up tax issues concerning SEZs with Finance Minister Arun Jaitley.
The Finance Minister will unveil the Budget for 2016-17 on February 29, which is widely expected to contain measures to boost economy as well as exports.
The Commerce Ministry has suggested the removal of minimum alternate tax (MAT) on these zones in the Budget.
The Export Promotion Council for EOUs and SEZs (EPCES) too has said that the government should not withdraw any tax incentives from SEZs as it might hit exports and job creation.
During the April-September period of current fiscal, exports from these zones stood at Rs 2.21 lakh crore as against Rs 4.63 lakh crore in 2014-15.
Overall merchandise exports from India have been declining since December 2014.

They have given several hit films together, and now director Priyadarshan and actor Akshay Kumar are all set to team up for a new project produced by filmmaker Rohit Shetty.
The yet-to-be titled film will be a comedy and reunite the popular actor-director ‘jodi’ six years after their 2010 movie “Khatta Meetha”.
“I am currently working on a film with Akshay Kumar which will be produced by Rohit Shetty. We have just finished the script. We will start the film by the end of July this year,” Priyadarshan told PTI.
The director has worked with the “Baby” star in various successful films, including the 1999-cult comedy “Hera Pheri”, “Garam Masala”, “Bhagam Bhaag”, “Bhool Bhulaiyaa” and “De Dana Dan”.
Priyadarshan, whose last Hindi film was “Rangrezz” in 2013, said rest of the cast is yet to be finalised but his film with Akshay will be in the comedy genre.
“It will be a comedy film, on the lines of the hilarious comedies we have done together. The details of other cast members are yet to be finalised. We are working on all those things. Currently I am just happy to be doing a film after a gap of two-three years.”
The director is also keen to do a Hindi remake of National Award winning director Vetrimaaran’s Tamil thriller “Visaranai”.
“I have only bought the rights as of now. I saw the film and I completely loved it. I think it is one of the most powerful films I have seen recently. I will begin work on it only after wrapping up my film with Rohit Shetty,” he said.
Based on the novel “Lock Up” by M Chandrakumar, “Visaranai” deals with police brutality, corruption and loss of innocence in the face of injustice. PTI
