State-run HAL handed over the first two Tejas aircraft to IAF, which makes up the first squadron named ‘Flying Daggers’, at a ceremony preceded by inter-faith prayers at the Aircraft System Testing Establishment.
The commissioning of the India-made fighter planes comes more than three decades after LCA went into development.
The aircraft was named “Tejas” (meaning radiance in Sanskrit) by Atal Bihari Vajpayee as Prime Minister.

AAP MLA Dinesh Mohaniya, arrested in a case of alleged molestation, was today granted bail by a Delhi court which said no purpose would be served by keeping him in judicial custody as investigation was almost complete.
Additional Sessions Judge Neelam Singh granted the relief to Mohaniya, an MLA from Sangam Vihar, whose earlier two pleas were dismissed by magisterial courts here.
The court granted him bail on a personal bond of Rs 50,000 and a surety of the like amount and directed him not to tamper with prosecution evidence or hamper the investigation in any manner.
“Perusal of record shows that the investigation is almost complete in the case. It is a fact that the appellant accused is a member of the Legislative Assembly and has his roots in the society.
“Since the investigation is almost complete and the fact that accused is in judicial custody since June 25, therefore no purpose would be served by keeping him in judicial custody anymore. Therefore, I am inclined to release accused Dinesh Mohaniya on bail on furnishing a personal bond and a surety bond of Rs 50,000 with one local surety of the like amount,” the judge said.
The judge further directed Mohaniya not to tamper with prosecution evidence or hamper the investigation in any manner and asked him to join the investigation as and when required.
The court, while granting the relief to the MLA, took into consideration the arguments of his counsel senior advocate H S Phoolka that there was a violation of procedure and law by the police authorities.
During the arguments, the Delhi police opposed the bail plea saying he was an influential person and if released, he may tamper with evidence and may even win over witnesses.
However, the MLA’s counsel argued that the politican was ready to abide by all conditions imposed by the court and not interfere in any manner with the investigation and prosecution evidence.
“He is a member of the legislative assembly, has deep roots in society and is ready to face trial. He has been falsely implicated in the case and is in judicial custody since June 25,” his bail plea said.
According to the complaint filed by a woman, she along with other women had visited the office of Mohaniya with regard to water problem on June 22 and the legislator and his associates had allegedly misbehaved with them and pushed them out of the office.
It was recorded in the FIR that threats were given to the women that if they dared to visit the office again, their hands and feet would be broken.PTI
The test launch of a new surface-to-air missile, developed jointly by India and Israel, was deferred today due to unspecified reason.
The trial was postponed though preparation for conducting the maiden test of the newly developed missile from the Integrated Test Range (ITR) off Odisha coast had reached the final stage, said an ITR official.
No reason was, however, given for postponing the test launch of the missile.
Arrangements are being made to conduct the test tomorrow if weather permits, DRDO sources said.
Apart from the missile, the system includes a multi- functional surveillance and threat alert radar (MF STAR) for detection, tracking and guidance of the missile.
The test-firing of the missile is to be jointly carried out by Indian defence personnel, DRDO and Israel Aerospace Industries, they said.
As a precautionary measure, Balasore district administration in consultation with defence officials made adequate arrangements to again temporarily shift 3652 civilians residing within 2.5 km radius of the launch pad No 3 of the ITR tomorrow, officials said.

“We are not going to give out the details of Salman Khan’s reply now. We need to first go through it in detail, along with our lawyers. Only then will both his reply and what we are going to do next will be made public,” she said in New Delhi.
The reply was e-mailed to NCW through a lawyer last evening while the NCW notice was sent directly to the 50-year-old actor to his residence.
“The reply has come from his lawyer, which means it is a legal reply. So we can’t just reply off the cuff,” Kumaramangalam said.
The NCW chief had earlier said that if the actor did not give a satisfactory reply then he could be asked to appear before the Commission.
Calling the comment “callous and condemnable”, NCW had issued Salman a notice last week, giving him five days to reply, over a comment he made comparing himself with a raped woman when quizzed about the gruelling shoot for the movie “Sultan”.
“We have sent him a letter asking for explanation in seven days. We have said that he should give a public apology,” the NCW chief had then said.
In Mumbai, the actor sent a letter to Maharashtra State Commission for Women yesterday through his lawyer stating that the case is already being heard by the national commission and the matter cannot be heard simultaneously at two places.
After considering his response, the panel expressed dissatisfaction over the actor’s argument.
“The Commission and its members today went through the letter given by the actor and we found it unsatisfactory. The letter says that case is already being heard by NCW and henceforth it would tantamount to a case of double zero party.
But we are of the view that our state commission has been conferred with concurrent powers and case can be heard at both the places simultaneously,” said MSCW chairperson Vijaya Rahatkar.

We believe that through the kind of work we have done, the civil nuclear agreement, the way India conducted itself, it is worthy of this.”

“We regret, in Seoul we and India, were unable to open space necessary to allow India to move into the NSG at this moment,” he said.
He said both countries will have to work to ensure that India’s bid is successful next time the issue is taken up by the NSG.
“I think what we need to do going forward is, for both of us India and the US, sit down and take a call on what happened in Seoul, take a close look at the diplomatic process which is significant and see what more we can do to ensure that next time we are successful.
When asked whether he thinks India will ratify the Paris climate deal before Obama administration’s tenure got over and, at the same time, it will become a member of the NSG, he said “I hope so”.

A Delhi court has dismissed a suit filed against the Ministry of Communication and IT and Postal Department by a telemarketing firm seeking recovery of over Rs 11 lakh allegedly misappropriated by its employees and public servants.
Additional District Judge Kaveri Baweja rejected the plaint saying it was not maintainable as the alleged breach of trust was done by the firm’s own employee and recovery cannot be done from the central government and postal authorities.
“In these circumstances, since as per the case of the plaintiff (firm), it is its own employee, who committed alleged breach of trust, for which FIR has also been registered by plaintiff, the suit for recovery of the misappropriated amount of Rs 11,46,800 does not lie against defendants herein i.e. Union of India and postal authorities,” the judge said.
The court said, “Accordingly, in view of the discussion, the preliminary issue is decided against the plaintiff and in favour of the defendant. Suit of plaintiff is accordingly dismissed as being not maintainable.”
According to the suit, firm Eage Shopping Pvt Ltd sells goods through teleshopping and Internet to customers on the basis of online and cash payment on delivery.
In February 2012, the firm entered into an agreement with Postal Department for availing services of Express Parcel as per which the department would deliver the articles to the customers and collect money on behalf of the company, it said.
It added the department was required to remit money to the firm through cheque in the name of Eage Shopping Pvt Ltd.
The plaint alleged that the firm came to know that some of its officials in connivance with postal officials and others embezzled its funds and stocks and had issued cheques in the name of ‘M/s Eage Shopping’ instead of ‘M/s Eage Shopping Pvt Ltd’ to release the cheques into sham bank account.
It claimed that defendants have received Rs 11.46 lakh from the firm’s customers but did not give it.
An FIR was lodged at Janak Puri Police Station for the alleged offences of cheating, forgery and criminal conspiracy against the firm’s employees for misappropriating its funds after which the company filed the suit.
The court also noted that the firm’s employee himself used to receive cheques from concerned postal officials in a wrong name i.e. in the name of sham company ‘M/s Eage Shopping’ instead of ‘M/s Eage Shopping Pvt Ltd.’
“He also got the said cheques encashed in sham account in the name of ‘M/s Eage Shopping’, thereby causing loss to the plaintiff company by aforesaid breach of trust,” it said.PTI

“Modiji, you have arrested us and kept us in Parliament Street Police Station. We are ready to go to Tihar Jail. But do not stop the work of Delhi,” he tweeted.
Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal had earlier tweeted, “Complaint filed against Manish Sisodia yesterday. Manish will go to 7, RCR today to surrender himself before PM,” he said.
Sisodia had yesterday tweeted, “Modiji, your enmity is with us. Arrest us. But do not stop the work of Delhi. We all are coming to surrender before you”.

Referring to yesterday’s incident, Special CP Law and Order North S B K Singh said the president of Gazipur Aadhti Association had given a letter at Gazipur Police Station stating that Sisodia adopted a “dictatorial attitude” on hearing their grievances during his visit to Gazipur Mandi.
“He was worried that Sisodia could get something wrong organised due to his position. No police action is made out in the matter,” he said.PTI
The BJP leadership is said to be upset over its MP Subramanian Swamy’s open attacks on Finance Minister Arun Jaitley and top bureaucrats and has taken a serious view of the matter.
Party sources said there was concern in the organisation and the leadership over the unbridled criticism aimed at the Finance Ministry and today’s threat of a “bloodbath” over being asked to be discipline.
Sources indicated the party was not in a hurry to act against Swamy, a Rajya Sabha member, and would adopt a wait- and-watch attitude for some time.
A senior BJP leader sought to dispel the impression that Swamy, who is said to enjoy the support of RSS, has the backing of the Sangh Parivar fountainhead claiming RSS would not support such an open attack that harms the government’s and party’s image.
Swamy today lashed out at Jaitley without naming him, in an apparent reaction to the minister urging him to exercise restraint and discipline in the wake of his attacks on government’s Chief Economic Adviser Arvind Subramanian and Economic Affairs Secretary Shaktikanta Das.
“People giving me unasked for advice of discipline and restraint don’t realise that if I disregard discipline there would be a bloodbath,” he tweeted in an obvious attack on Jaitley.
“BJP should direct our Ministers to wear traditional and modernised Indian clothes while abroad. In coat and tie, they look like waiters,” Swamy said in another tweet.
