Veteran actress Jaya Bachchan believes filmmakers of the past made movies with certain honesty to their craft, something which is missing in the cinema today.
Jaya says people in her era, and even before, were guided by a true passion for cinema to tell the stories that were essential.
“I think people at that time, writers, thinkers, artistes of different kinds, musicians, or anybody who had some kind of sensitivity in them, made cinema that they thought should be made.
“Of course, it had to talk about the time they were living in, or had lived with. Unfortunately, or fortunately, they didn’t talk about what is going to happen to cinema (in the future),” she said.
According to the actress, their strive for creativity resulted in good cinema, unlike the filmmakers of today, who chase money.
“Most importantly they were all creative people and not businessmen. I think that is why they could make the kind of cinema they did at that time which is relevant even today.”
She was speaking at a special panel discussion on the cinema of iconic filmmaker Bimal Roy, at the 18th Jio MAMI Mumbai Film Festival with Star, last evening.
The “Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham” actress said filmmaking today has undergone a huge change, with no space for subtlety or even shame.
“Unfortunately, the demand from a filmmaker is very different today than it was at that time. Filmmakers at that 搬瓦工 time didn’t do business, they created art. Today it is business, all about numbers. Everything is thrown at your face.
“People have forgotten subtlety, open display of affection is considered smart. All that definition has changed. Aur sharam naam ki toh koi cheez he Nahi hai.”
Jaya also pointed out that Bollywood films have increasingly started to ape west and do not look Indian anymore.
“How many characters today in our cinema, whether men, or women, represent our country? They could be from anywhere in the world. They don’t look Indian.
“If you see an English film, the way they speak, their mannerism, everything is so different from the American culture. But in our movies, I mean… I miss that (old era).”
The actress was, however, all praise for movies like “Aligarh” and “Masaan”, which she said narrated true stories of India.
Jaya said if directors focus more on the content, their films will be recognised.
“The most important thing is, what a filmmaker wants. Does he want to tell a story, or exhibit stars? The minute you start overloading your film with big names so that you get good opening, then it is a problem.
“But, if a filmmaker wants to tell a story, and decides to take actors, even who are not known, within a certain budget, it will get the recognition, the results.
In a judgement that may bring relief to millions of commuters in the NCR region, the Allahabad High Court today ruled that henceforth no toll tax shall be taken from those using the 9.2-km-long, eight-lane Delhi-Noida Direct (DND) flyway.
A division bench comprising Justices Arun Tandon and Sunita Agarwal passed the order while allowing a public interest litigation filed by the Federation of Noida Residents’ Welfare Association.
The PIL, which was filed in 2012, had challenged the “levy and collection of toll in the name of user fee by Noida Toll Bridge Company”.
The high court had on August 8 reserved its judgement on the plea.
In a more than 100-page judgement, the court held, “The user fee which is being levied/realised is not supported by the legal provisions relied upon by the Concessionaire (Noida Toll Bridge Company), Infrastructure Leaning and Financial Services (promoter and developer of the project) and the Noida Authority.”
It said that the “right to levy and collect user fee from the commuters as conferred upon the Concessionaire under the concession agreement suffers from excessive delegation and is contrary to the provisions the UP Industrial Development Act”.
The court noted that “the Concessionaire, according to their own financial statements, has recovered Rs 810.18 crore (approx) from toll income from the date of commencement of the project till 31.03.2014 etoro and after deduction of operation and maintenance expenses and corporate income tax, the surplus was Rs 578.80 crore (computed before interest, depreciation, and lease rental received by the Concessionaire)”.
“They have further realised user fee/toll two-and-a-half years thereafter between 01.04.2014 and 30.09.2016 which, as per the collection of user fee in the year 2013-14 would work out to an additional sum of Rs 300 crore (approx).
“We are, therefore, more than satisfied that the Concessionaire cannot now recover the user fees from the users/commuters of the Noida Toll Bridge the DND Flyover,” the high court said.
Leg-spinner Amit Mishra may not be a regular in India’s limited overs set-up but he is relishing the role of a senior spinner in the ongoing ODI series against New Zealand, in the absence of the rested Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja.
After not getting a game in the Test series, Mishra has made it count in the one-dayers by picking up three wickets in both Dharamsala and Delhi.
“The experience (of helping youngsters) has been good so far. Whenever they ask me, I give them tips. Even in the game, they ask me during meetings and I try to help them as much as I can. I am really enjoying this role and I feel it is my duty to support the youngsters,” said Mishra on the eve of the third ODI against New Zealand here tomorrow.
A berth in the Champions Trophy seems like a long shot for Mishra at this stage. He has been in and out of the team across formats ever since making his international debut in 2003.
While he is happily sharing the tricks of the trade with youngsters like Axar Patel and Jayant Yadav, Mishra gets his share of learning from coach and former teammate Anil Kumble.
“Anil bhai helps me a lot. He doesn’t talk a lot about technique, it is mentally that he helps a great deal. For example, I was not selected in the eleven for the Test matches but still he was there to help me. Besides, we discuss where to bowl, at what pace to bowl, the field placement against the batsmen. It is a lot of learning.”
“Even though he (Kumle) is a bowler, he is always giving tips to batsmen especially the tailenders who can play a crucial role in matches that go down to the wire,” said the spinner.
One reason Mishra has not cemented his place in the team, especially in the shorter formats, is because he has not been able to contribute much with the bat compared to the younger blood.
Even in the last game in Mohali, he was out to a reckless stroke when the match was set for a tight finish. Eventually, the team suffered an unexpected loss in the second ODI.
“I can’t say much about my batting ability going down over the years. Last match was an opportunity and I played a bad shot. I though it was required (to play an attacking shot) 嘉盛 at that time. We could have won the game if any of us would have stayed in longer. Next time, I will take my time when there is a situation like that (in Delhi) and try to prove myself.”
Despite the six run loss, the atmosphere in the dressing room remained positive.
“Anil bhai is always positive no matter what happens. The team has the talent to win every match. But like I said, we did not play to our potential. We would have won had we played proper cricket. We will try not to repeat the mistakes of the last game.”
Talking about his mindset while bowling, Mishra said he always goes into the middle with an aggressive mindset.
“As a spinner, we always go for wickets. We talk about having multiple plans (before the game). If one doesn’t work, then go for Plan ‘B’ or Plan ‘C’. Like it happened in the last match, our second plan worked and the first did not,” he added.

In yet another attempt to internationalise the Kashmir issue, Pakistan’s ambassador to the US Jalil Abbas Jilani has called on BlueHost优惠码 the global community to help resolve the long-pending dispute with India, calling it a “nuclear flashpoint” in South Asia.
Delivering a keynote address at the World Affairs Council, a Washington-based think-tank, on Thursday night, the envoy said Kashmir was a “nuclear flashpoint” and it must not be underestimated.
Associated Press of Pakistan reported that the envoy regretted that India was undermining all diplomatic efforts for a dialogue, including its refusal to engage at the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) forum.
“The peace and stability in South Asia will not be possible without resolving underlying disputes, particularly the Jammu and Kashmir being the core dispute,” Jilani said.
“The international community and the US in particular need to play a role in seeking a peaceful settlement of Kashmir dispute between India and Pakistan, in accordance with the relevant UN Security Council resolutions,” he said.
Bollywood actor John Abraham said he was initially apprehensive to ask his co-star Sonakshi Sinha to do action sequences in their upcoming film “Force 2”.
In the second installment of “Force”, an action drama, John and Sonakshi will be seen doing some heavy duty daredevil scenes.
“There was a scene where I and Sonakshi had to jump… and it was just second day of shoot. I was thinking should I tell her we have to jump… bluehost I was actually worried thinking what if she calls her dad (Shatrughan Sinha),” John told reporters here at the song launch event of “Force 2”.

John said it was Abhinay’s idea to give the actor’s voice-over for the anthem song of “Force 2”.
“Lal Rang” salutes India’s unsung martyrs and for the first time ever John has lent his voice to a track.
“I had tears in my eyes while singing it. I also had anger while doing the song. It was a voice over but the experience was fantastic,” John said.
The film, a sequel to the 2011 hit “Force”, is due to release on November 18.

The government today got cracking on the debit card fraud, asking banks concerned and RBI to submit report on the nature of security breach which compromised over 3.25 million cards and assured customers that strong action will be taken while their interests will not come to any harm.
“I have sought a report in the debit card issue. The idea is to contain the damage,” Finance Minister Arun Jaitley told reporters here.
According to the National Payments Corporation of India, as many as 641 customers across 19 banks have been duped of Rs 1.3 crore using stolen debit card data.
The government asked the Reserve Bank of India as well as the affected banks to provide details of the data breach and also preparedness to deal with cyber crimes.
Department of Economic Affairs Secretary Shaktikanta Das said a report has been sought on all aspects.
“There is no cause for alarm. The integrity of IT system of banks is robust and whatever action is required, the government will take promptly,” he said.
The government, he said, is seized of the matter and reports have been called from RBI and banks to know what exactly has happened.
A preliminary input “sort of report” has already come in and the government is awaiting further details from the final report, he said.
“After getting the report… whatever action is required, necessary action will be taken by the government,” he said.
Earlier, on the sidelines of a German government event, Das said: “Customers should not panic because these hackings are done through computer and trail can easily be reached…
They should not be alarmed. Whatever action has to be taken, it will be done with speed.”
Of the debit cards affected, about 26.5 lakh are on Visa and MasterCard platforms while 6,00,000 are on RuPay. The breach reportedly involved some 90 ATMs.
While Visa and MasterCard, in separate statements, have stated that their own networks had not been compromised, Hitachi subsidiary Hitachi Payment Services, which manages some of the ATM network processing, was investigating the matter, including whether there was a malware problem.
Das said that based on the report of RBI and banks, the government would exactly know what happened.
“And as you know, in the cyber world, the trail will always be there and it will be our effort to locate, to sort of trace the exact trail and locate the point of origin of where this has happened, and the government will definitely act on this,” he said.
(AP) South Africa has decided to withdraw from the International Criminal Court following a dispute last year over a visit by Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir who is wanted by the tribunal for alleged war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide.
A copy of the “Instrument of Withdrawal,” dated Wednesday and signed by Foreign Minister Maite Nkoana-Mashabane, was obtained yesterday by The Associated Press.
It states that South Africa “has found that its obligations with respect to the peaceful resolution of conflicts at times are incompatible with the interpretation given by the International Criminal Court of obligations contained in the Rome Statute” which established the court.
Under the Rome Statute, South Africa as a party to the ICC has an obligation to arrest anyone sought by the tribunal.
The charges against al-Bashir stem from the bloodshed in Sudan’s western Darfur region which began in 2003 when rebels took up arms against the government in Khartoum, accusing it of discrimination and neglect. The United Nations says 300,000 people have died in the conflict and 2.7 million have fled their homes.
In June 2015, Al-Bashir went to South Africa to attend an African Union summit but the government didn’t arrest him. A provincial court ordered him to remain in the country while judges deliberated on whether he should be arrested on the ICC warrants, but al-Bashir left for Sudan before the court ruled that he should indeed be arrested. The Supreme Court of Appeal later described the government’s failure to arrest al-Bashir as “disgraceful conduct.”
The government said in a statement in late June 2015 that it would consider withdrawing from the International Criminal Court as a “last resort” following the dispute over al-Bashir.
It cited “contradictions” in the statute and said South Africa would have found it difficult to arrest al-Bashir because of treaty obligations to the African Union.
The African Union has asked the International Criminal Court to stop proceedings against sitting presidents and has said it will not compel any member states to arrest a leader on behalf of the ICC.
South Africa’s decision to quit the court follows Tuesday’s announcement that Burundi’s President Pierre Nkurunziza signed legislation to make his country the first to withdraw from the ICC, which had said it would investigate recent political violence there.
No country has ever withdrawn from the ICC, which was established to prosecute cases of genocide, war crimes and crimes against humanity.PTI

India has not responded to Pakistan’s request and reminders to send the 24 Indian witnesses in the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks case to testify in a Pakistani court, the prosecution today told an anti-terrorism court here conducting the trial.
“We are still waiting India’s response on the matter. The Foreign Ministry had written to India several months ago and even sent reminders but penis enlargement the Indian government has not responded to us,” a prosecution official told Islamabad Anti- Terrorism Court hearing the case at Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi.
The official informed the court that Pakistan’s Director General, South Asia, had also taken up the matter with India of sending the 24 Indian witnesses to Pakistan to record their statements so that the trial is completed at the earliest.
The court adjourned the proceedings till November 2.
The official said the case cannot move forward unless India sends the witnesses here to record their statements.
“We are going to send another reminder to India asking it either to send the witnesses or refuse. If India wants early conclusion of the Mumbai case, it will have to send its witnesses here,” he said.
According to the prosecution, all Pakistani witnesses have recorded their statements.
India has been urging Pakistan to complete the trial at the earliest. It has said enough evidence has been shared with Pakistan to prosecute the accused.
The mastermind of the Mumbai attacks and Lashkar-e-Taiba operations commander Zaki-ur Rehman Lakhvi and Abdul Wajid, Mazhar Iqbal, Hamad Amin Sadiq, Shahid Jameel Riaz, Jamil Ahmed and Younis Anjum are accused of abetment to murder, attempted murder, planning and executing the Mumbai attacks.
Lakhvi has been hiding since he secured bail in the case 17 months ago. Other suspects are lodged in the Adiala Jail.
The case has been going on for more than six years.
166 people were killed in the attacks carried out by 10 LeT terrorists. Nine were killed while the lone survivor Ajmal Kasab was captured and later executed.
