MUMBAI: “My husband was dying. His life was a struggle every single day. She gave her a second chance,” the wife of one of the benefactors of Kavita Karkare’s last act of generosity told TOI on Tuesday.
Slain ATS chief Hemant Karkare’s children donated the liver, kidneys and eyes of their mother, Kavita Karkare, after she was declared brain dead on Monday following a stroke. Hours later, her organs were used to give a new lease of life to three individuals, who have been waiting long for transplants.
“My husband was diagnosed with liver cirrhosis. His health condition made it extremely difficult for him to work, but he continued going to office as he had to support us. We were told he had to be extremely lucky to get a liver soon,” said the wife of 49-year-old liver recipient. “We had seen Kavita Karkare only on television after the 26/11 terror attacks. Who would imagine our lives would be connected in this manner? My husband’s colleagues informed us about the donation,” said the Bhayander resident, adding that the family is now trying to raise money to pay for the transplant.
The transplant team at Kokilaben Hospital in Andheri said the surgery had gone off well and the patient may be taken off ventilator by Wednesday. “His liver condition would leave him with recurrent health problems like water retention in chest and abdomen. He suffered major breathing difficulties at times,” said Dr Vinay Kumaran, head of the transplant programme.
One of the kidney recipients had been on dialysis for over seven years and had registered for a cadaver donor way back in January 2007. “He has been coming to us for long. Karkare family’s gesture has saved a young life and an entire family,” said Dr Tarang Gianchandani, CEO, Jaslok Hospital.
The other 48-year-old kidney recipient at PD Hinduja Hospital in Mahim is also recovering well, said the doctors.
Over 3,000 patients are waiting for a kidney and 200 for liver in the Zonal Transplant Coordination Committee’s list.

Sarita Devi broke down on the podium during the Asian Games medal ceremony for the lightweight 57-60 kg category in Incheon on Wednesday, refusing to wear the bronze medal awarded to her around her neck.
Mr David B. Francis, an AIBA Supervisor, known as the Technical Delegate, submitted a report to the Olympic Council of Asia concerning the case of an Indian Boxer’s behaviour who refused the bronze medal at the Award Ceremony for the 17th Asian Games in Incheon, Korea, which took place on Wednesday at the Sunhak Boxing Competition Venue.
“The whole incident looked like a well planned scenario by her and her team, and it is regretful to watch a boxer refuse the medal regardless of what happened in the competition. In this regard, as the Technical Delegate, I had to request OCA to review this incident, so any boxer or athlete in other sports will not follow in her footsteps by respecting the spirit of fair-play and sportsmanship of the Olympic Movement,” said Mr Francis.
In early September, AIBA had provisionally recognized Boxing India as the new National Federation representing the sport of boxing in India, ending the exclusion of the previous National Federation. However, all boxers participating at the Asian Games currently were selected by the Ad Hoc Committee formed by the Indian Olympic Association, not by Boxing India. (Also Read: Sarita May be Punished for Returning Medal)
It was clear that the whole Indian Boxing Team were protesting the AIBA Referees and Judges’ system and management, which was obviously caused by a lack of understanding of the AIBA Technical and AOB Competition Rules.
Following the AIBA Technical Delegate’s letter to OCA, Ms Laishram Sarita Devi from India, who competed in the Women’s Lightweight category (60 kg) against Ms Jina Park from Korea in the Semi-Finals on Tuesday lost by unanimous decision 3-0.
Immediately after the bout, the Indian Team submitted a protest, however the Indian Team did not follow the AIBA Technical Rules and protested against the judges’ decisions, though the Rules only allow a protest against the Referee’s Decision.
Then, the boxer appeared at the Medal Ceremony which took place today after the Women’s Finals were over.
When the medal presenter tried to put the medal on her neck, she refused and grabbed the medal, walked to the Korean boxer and put the medal on her neck instead.
As the Korean boxer returned it back to the Indian Boxer, she then left the medal at the podium and left the Ceremony.
Then, after the Organizing Committee member of staff followed her and insisted she take the medal, she asked him to leave it in the protest room. When the Organizing Committee staff walked towards the protest room, all Indian journalists followed the staff and some of them shouted “Koreans are stealing their medal.”
AIBA has already preceded its Disciplinary Action Process to review this case, and the decision will be made immediately after the Asian Games.
The Mumbai arm of the Aam Aadmi Party suffered a major blow on Tuesday after two of the party’s most prominent faces tendered resignations from their party positions. State Convener Anjali Damania, who contested the Lok Sabha election unsuccessfully against Nitin Gadkari in Nagpur, and State Secretary Preeti Sharma Menon resigned citing personal reasons.
Both had put in their papers in June and had spoken candidly of their unhappiness with developments in the party in the aftermath of the Lok Sabha elections. But soon after withdrew it.
Though AAP is not contesting the Maharashtra Assembly elections, the resignations of Damania and Menon from their leadership positions in the state executive committee indicate a churn within the party that is at present supposed to be focusing on party-building. The official reason cited for the resignations is that the duo “could not cope with the multi-tasking” that was expected of them.
Filmmaker Vishal Bhardwaj whose next ‘Haider’ has been written by Kashmiri journalist Basharat Peer, says the movie is set in the year 1995, which was the peak of militancy in the Valley.
The 49-year-old director says it was with the help of Mr. Basharat, the author of Curfewed Night, an eyewitness account of the Kashmir conflict that he could manage to complete his Shakespearean trilogy.
The director has set his adaptation of ‘Hamlet’ against the unrest in the Valley.
“I had a great working experience with Basharat, who is the writer of ‘Haider’. This is the first time I have worked with a journalist. I have imagined a lot about Kashmir, but the Kashmir of 95 I could only see through Basharat’s eyes,” said Bhardwaj at the launch of his three books ‘Maqbool’, ‘Omkara’ and ‘Haider’ based on his movie adaptations.
The director also thanked his past script collaborators Abbas Tyrewala, who penned ‘Maqbool’ and Robin Bhatt and Abhishek Chaubey, co-writers of ‘Omkara’.
Bhardwaj revealed that he struggled for more than a year to raise money for ‘Maqbool’, his first movie based on Shakespeare’s ‘Macbeth’
“I roamed around with the script of ‘Maqbool’ for one and a half years. Tabu was the only person who had said yes to the film at that time. I met many producers and none of them acknowledged the script. One of them asked me not to go ahead with the film as Shakespeare’s stories were boring,” he said.
The filmmaker said that despite the producer’s advice, he went on to complete the trilogy in the past 10 years.
“I feel very emotional to get so much love and respect. Money, I have never earned. The grass is always greener on the other side. But I am happy that I started my journey with ‘Maqbool’ At that point of time I was a student and working with Om Puri, Naseeruddin Shah, Pankaj Kapoor, Irrfan Khan, Piyush Mishra was unbelievable,” he said.
‘Haider’ stars Shahid Kapoor, Shraddha Kapoor, Tabu, Kay Kay Menon and will hit theatres on Thursday.
Real News of India is committed to cover social issues such as health to make people and the Government of the situation, to find a solution to the problem and improve the quality of service in various Government Sectors.
In this context Real News of India received messages from the general public regarding the mismanagement, ill treatment to patients and the poor services of Bhabha Hospital. Accordingly Real News of india did a on the spot cover of Bhabha Hospital. The hospital is supposed to provide free medicines to the patients. Out of the number of medicines prescribed by the doctor only a few cheap medicines are provided by the hospital. The patients are asked to buy medicines from outside which are beyond reach from the low income groups. In the video taken by Real News of India an elderly person who has injured his hand says that he had brought Rs200 from home, out of which Rs 150 was spent on medicines. After that he was asked to do some tests from outside for which he look worried as to from where he would bring the money.
The maternity ward has very few doctors, women in labour pain are not taken care and to add the misery the ward boys misbehave with the patients in a rather barbaric manner. The proof of the misbehavior by the hospital staff is recorded by Real News of India.
When Real News of India inquired of the situation to the hospital management they justify by saying the management is trying to supply all the medicines which would take time. The management has been saying this to patients for the past two months. In response to the acute shortage of doctors the management says it is working on it. This acute shortage of medicinal staff has been there for more than six months.
BMC hospitals which is established with the sole purpose of serving the low income groups is now dithering from its objective. There is nexus of commission among the hospital staff and medical shops for a large amount of medicines that is bought from outside the hospital. The economically backward have a right to proper health care and to misbehave with patients is a heinous crime.
Therefore these irregularities and ill-treatment to patients should be immediately stopped. The hospital should refer to the guidelines of objective of such BMC hospitals and rectify its mistakes for the smooth operation and management of the hospital.

New Delhi: Congress today targeted BJP chief Amit Shah over his sharing of the dais with mafia don-turned- politician DP Yadav during an election rally, saying birds of a feather flock together.
The party also expressed displeasure over the “mujrewala” remark which was reportedly made by Shah against Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda during campaigning for the upcoming Assembly polls in the state.
“We cannot advise the president of BJP as to what company he should keep… (But) there is an old saying, birds of a feather flock together,” party spokesperson Anand Sharma told reporters here in reaction to the matter of Yadav joining Shah during campaigning in Haryana.
Almost a decade after he was thrown out by BJP over his controversial background, Yadav was seen sharing the dais with Shah on Monday.
Yadav had accompanied Shah to three places in Haryana to canvass for votes for BJP candidates ahead of the Oct. 15 Assembly elections.
On the issue of Shah’s remarks directed at the Haryana Chief Minister, Sharma reacted sharply, saying, “I cannot respond to Shah by descending to his level and language. It is not possible for me to communicate in his language.”
Shah’s ‘mujrewala’ barb reportedly came at a rally in Hisar where he said that the Haryana chief minister has been dancing to the tune of the Congress high command in Delhi in order to save his chair.

Chavan, who resigned as Chief Minister after NCP pulled out of the government, filed nomination from Karad South amidst rousing welcome from supporters.
This will be Chavan’s first electoral battle after he lost the 1999 Lok Sabha elections from Karad, which he represented thrice.
MNS chief Raj Thackeray, who had declared at a rally a few months ago that he would enter the electoral battle by contesting the polls, will not contest.
The Congress has fielded candidates for all the 288 seats, while the NCP’s 286 candidates will be in the fray.
BJP has fielded candidates in 257 seats, state party spokesperson Keshav Upadhye had said yesterday.
“The remaining 31 seats have been given to our allies,” he had said.
Shiv Sena president Uddhav Thackeray, whose name was being pitched by his party as the Chief Ministerial candidate, is also not contesting.
The Sena declared a list of 286 candidates. The two constituencies where the party has not fielded candidates are Parli, where Gopinath Munde’s daughter Pankaja is BJP nominee, and Byculla, where Arun Gawli’s daughter Geeta is nominee.
The scrutiny will take place on September 29 and last date of withdrawing the nominations is September 30.
