After an earthquake of 6.7 magnitude hit Tamernglong district in Manipur at 4.35 AM on Monday, Cabinet Secretary, P K Sinha, chaired a meeting of the National Crisis Management Committee (NCMC) on Monday morning to review the situation and provide Central assistance for relief and rescue operations in the affected areas.
According to official government figures, so far there are six casualties and 43 persons have been injured as a result of the earthquake. Damage to a few buildings, residential units and government offices have been reported, including damage to a six-storey building in Imphal.
“Telecom connectivity is more or less normal. Power supply to Imphal city has been disrupted and some power installations have suffered damage,” a Home Ministry release on Monday morning stated. At the NCMC meeting, a decision was taken to air lift two teams of 45 members each of the National Disaster Relief Force (NDRF) from Guwahati to Imphal for relief and rescue, and another team to Silchar in Assam.
